ACT After-School Classes

Hello ACT Students and Families!

We’ve missed you! We here at SLO REP have spent quite a bit of time over the past months imagining what theatre during the time of Covid-19 might look like. Obviously, things are going to be a bit different this year, and we’re all doing our best to adjust to our “new normal.” But we were very encouraged by the success our (physically distant) summer camps in July, and we are excited to bring you some theatre fun this fall taught by our wonderful teaching artists! Here are some notes  on our fall session of classes:

  • We know that arts opportunities will be few and far between as school resumes, so we’ve added more classes so as many students as possible can participate in theatre class, including daytime classes for homeschool families and students with a flexible school schedule.
  • Don’t let tuition requirements stop you from signing up for classes! There is ample scholarship funding available so that everyone who wishes to participate can do so (as space allows.)
  • Session I of classes will take place September 14-October 8. Classes this fall will take place twice per week (M/W or T/TH), complementing your school schedule.
  • We’re also planning some awesome classes for our advanced teens: Acting and Scene Study and Introduction to Technical Theatre. These two classes will run September 21-November 19.
  • Depending on the demand from our community, we are planning a tentative Session II for October 12-November 5. Sessions I and II will feature different class material and are designed to be repeated.
  • Classes will be limited to 6-8 students per session, depending on the space in which they’re held.
  • We have put in place a number of health and safety measures, including the hiring of additional staff, physical distancing during class, masks during certain portions of camp, hygiene practices, and contactless pickup and dropoff. Please read the full guide here.
  • All of our theatre games, warm-ups, and exercises, and rehearsals will be physically distanced. We’re excited to share with you the creative ways we’ve re-imagined class activities, and we’re looking forward to hearing your creative ideas, too!
  • In past years, ACT’s summer camps have focused primarily on performing (acting, singing, dancing). While performing will certainly feature prominently in our camps, we are excited to expand some in-class activities to include exposure to some of the other elements of theatre (like scenic, costume, or prop design) and to introduce some multi-media elements, too.
  • We’ll still be ending our classes with a celebratory sharing for family. More details to come!
  • We are aware that because of class size limitations, some students may not be able to participate in classes this fall. If you find that classes have filled before you could register, please email us to let us know! We are doing our best to gauge families’ interest and offer the appropriate number of classes, and are interested to know if we can be offering more classes to meet the needs of our community!

It’s been a long while since ACT has offered a technical theatre class, and we’re so glad it’s back! This class is designed for teens who are interested in the backstage world of theatre. We’ll introduce students to the various roles in technical theatre and what they do, and then we’ll dive more fully into the responsibilities and tools used by Stage Managers, Scenic Designers, and Costume Designers. Students will have the opportunity to create their own prompt book, scenic and costume designs, which they’ll share at an end-of-class open house.
