ACT After-School Classes

Hello ACT Students and Families!

Our classes are a bit different this session, but we are nevertheless excited to bring you some theatre fun this winter taught by our wonderful teaching artists! Here are some things to know about our Winter Session I classes:
  • Classes feature new material each session and are designed to be repeated. If you’ve taken a similar class before, we hope you’ll join us again!
  • Don’t let tuition requirements stop you from signing up for classes! There is ample scholarship funding available so that everyone who wishes to participate can do so (as space allows.)
  • Classes will be limited to 8 students per session, and all of our theatre games, warm-ups, and exercises, and rehearsals will be physically distanced.
  • We have put in place a number of health and safety measures to address Covid-19. Please read the full guide here.
  • We are aware that because of class size limitations, some students may not be able to participate in classes this session. If you find that classes have filled before you could register, please email us to let us know! We are doing our best to offer the appropriate number of classes, and are interested to know if we can be offering more to meet the needs of our community!
-Kerry DiMaggio, Education Director

Playwriting for the Actor (ages 13+*)

February 15-April 14**
Monday/Wednesdays 4:45-6:15pm
Instructor: Grantland Tracy
$400

This class will take place on the SLO REP stage following all COVID protocols. Max 8 students.

This class introduces the craft of writing for the theater. Through weekly assignments, in-class writing exercises, and work on a sustained piece, students will explore the basic elements of play structure, plot, character and dialogue and will have the opportunity to act in their peers’ work. Students don’t need to be aspiring playwrights in order to benefit from writing experience and training. Having a background in playwriting can help an actor better understand a play’s structure and approach script analysis at a deeper level. By learning to craft dialogue and stage directions themselves, students will also learn where to search or context clues and background information when they approach a text as an actor. Please note that this class will require some out-of-class work/reading.

*While this class is open to students ages 13+, students aged 12 with previous training or experience will be considered; please contact Kerry for more information.
