“Retired people are like nuclear power stations. We like to live by the sea.”
On a summer evening in an isolated seaside cottage in the East of England, a pair of retired nuclear scientists are startled by a visit from a former colleague. As some crackers and wine are trotted out, so are various old jealousies and secrets, leading to the revelation of a surprising and dangerous plan. The three friends must come to terms with their friendship, their past and the present in this beautifully-written drama that is both incredibly funny and searingly honest.
The Children is about responsibility and guilt, reparation and redemption; it’s a real-time, one-act pressure cooker that poses a difficult question: what do we owe, if anything, to the next generation?
SLO REP is proud to present the Central Coast premiere of Lucy Kirkwood’s brave, humane and beautifully written play that confronts the responsibility each generation must face for the way it leaves the world.
The Children runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

A richly suggestive and beautifully written piece of work.... Kirkwood is the most rewarding dramatist of her generation.

The Children is tantalizingly hard to define: it is about aging and responsibility…somewhat menacing, and often funny…What The Children is not is a polemic about the oft-cited irresponsibility of baby boomers; instead it rather penetratingly asks what they owe younger generations, exactly.
